Lion Comics #201 - Modesty Blaise | Nov '07

Prakash Publishers | Price: INR 10 | Pages: 100 | B/W | Size: B6 | Tamil | Laminated/HardCover

Surprise, Surprise.... We have the Lion # 201 "Kaateri Kaanagam" starring Modesty Blaise as Nov'07 release. So, it's good to see the Prakash Publishers have tentatively planned to release issues every 2 months, at least going by the current release cycle.

Lion #201 - Kaateri Kaanagam
(காட்டேரி கானகம்)
Lion 201 Cover-1

As far the story goes, there is no denial of fact that Modesty Blaise and Willy Garvin simply steal the show, with an interesting plot of Vampires shielded underworld gang being busted with the help of old Network ally.  I wouldn't be able to judge the quality of original dialogues, but as usual, Editor Vijayan simply is awesome in his translation depicted at various pages.  Tamil at its best.

I am pretty disappointed with the cover art.  At first sight, I was astonished to see the sparkling cover, and only realized later that it has been picked up from Biggles Digests released recently.

For those who missed the previous post, the link is right here.  Editor seems to have found a way to reduce the production work for this release, with this approach.

If I am not wrong, I believe this is the first time Lion-Muthu Publishers have resorted to a cover art which isn't part of their line-up.  Only the defunct Ponni, Meghala back in 90's used to feature this poor conceived strategy.  I hope it's a one shot, and we go back to our trademark cover designs.

Lion 201 Hotline
Lion #202 Preview (Lucky Luke)
Lion 201 NextIssues-1

Editor's ever popular Hotline, as usual, and a preview of next Lucky Luke Extravaganza are other highlights.  And it also contains a preview of, what likely seems to be an another, Text Willer Saga in a 3 part series, planned to follow the Lucky issue.

As usual, it makes up for a good wait. But, let’s hope we get to see them later, if not earlier.

Hi guys,

People missing comics really miss a world. Particularly missing Lion and muthu makes them losers. Comics is a world, not all can enter into it.
Only a few-special ones do.

PRAKASH PUBLISHERS do a great job. All their issues are really good.
Im a new fan of Lion and Muthu. I came across Lion and Muthu in 1996(from Modesty's puli varuthu). I grew up reading Rani comics.
After seeing Lion and Muthu,I stopped reading Rani comics.
Wow..what a Professionalism.. Their stories are in good quality.
Dialogues are perfectly mature. Translation absolutely wins.
Though old Rani comics did had good artwork,it failed to attract audience coz of bad translation-just for the sake of it.

L&M Editor's taste, sincerity and efforts make their issues special,
even for an average story.

The Only thing that bothers is the cover design.
Imitation of cover design from originals doesn't look royal to L&M.
The colors used are attractive but the design collapses with the touch
of local artists and they are not classical.Being a Creative Head/3d artist in a company,I can suggest an idea.

Most of L&M cover design shows this-a figure holding/posing with a gun. XIII,blueberry, prince covers are good. Covers can be like collages
showing some incidents, person's feelings or actions(i remember, vibareedha vidhavai, kallaraiyil oru kavignan)
from the stroy itself. Atleast the design can be creative. The recent
issue of lion 'Kaateri kaanaham' cover is nice, but in an article said
by Rafiq, it was an imitation.

We need L&M to be great. Will Mr.Vijayan consider these words?

And Thanks to Rafiq for his dedication, sincerity and interest in developing this sticking 'comicology'.Articles here about Lion and Muthu are more informative that it gives the storyline, artwork, scanned pages and editorial of the latest issues.

Again thanks to Rafiq, for spending his valuable time for us.

Thanks,
Lutherking.

Dear Readers,

Just Now bought The Lucky Luke Series from TARA Press,New Delhi, India.

Tara Press is a Trade Imprint of India Research Press (www.indiaresearchpress.com) and they do have the Exclusive English language publishing rights for Lucky Luke for the indian subcontinent.

Currently they do have 7 Titles of Lucky Luke in English:

(1) Western Circus (Super Circus in Tamil-Mini Lion Comics)
(2) Jesse James (Jesse James in Tamil-Lion Comics)
(3) Calamity Jane (Adhiradi Jane in Tamil-Lion Comics)
(4) Dalton City (Dalton Nagaram in Tamil-Lion Comics)
(5) Ma Dalton (Taai illamal Naan illai in Tamil-Lion Comics)
(6) The Dashing White Cow Boy (Medai'il Oru Manmadhan in Tamil-Lion Comics)
(7) The TenderFoot - Yet to be published in Tamil.

Out of these, 5 titles are available in all the LandMark shops in the same section as that of Asterix and TinTin (Dalton City & Calamity Jane are not available in all the LandMark).

All these titles are priced at Rs 195.00 & available in the same size as that of Asterix. The Paper Quality is Good (170 GSM). However, the printing quality is not up to the mark.

it seems they have used the same scanned covers of the old issues (Example-First page of Western Circus). The Colours are dull & the lettering is also not upto the mark.
The less said about the Translation the better. However, they have made an attempt to get world qulaity comics in india and this has to be appreicated.

By the way, the word is that they are on the verge of publishing Iznogud (Madhi illa mandhiri) in English as well. Talks are also on to get XIII in India very soon.

Post Script 1:Part 19 of the XIII Saga is out in french with Jean Van Hamme contribution. Have a look.

Post Script 2: There is a New Comic series by the name of Srirou & this is available in Euro Kids series with 11 titles and priced at Rs 195.00. Am just waiting for the inputs from Comic Jaambavans like Viswa, Rafiq, ERB to write about these books before buying them.

Thanks & Regards,

Chezhian, thanks for the update. I have heard about Tara Press new publishes of Lucky Luke, and witnessed them in Landmark, would be getting my hands on it this week, and would reserve an article about it later. I agree the Printing wasn't of great quality, but hopefully at Rs.195/- its worth the price, seeing the way the Originals are converted in INR.

Regarding Euro Books, I also saw the Spirtius in Landmark, at the outset it looks pretty cool, and I am planning to buy 2 of them to sample it out, and will blog about it sooner. The cover says, Spirtius is best known Belgian comics next to Tin-Tin. Let's see how good that is.

Sundar/Viswa,

Thanks for the information regarding Lucky Luke Series in Landmark. Yeah, I bought those 5 books and looking forward XIII in English.

Regards,
Mahesh

For XIII fans,
First two parts of XIII in English available for download at

http://orde.org.uk/comics/

(and Spirou too available there.)

15 parts of XIII in German..
